TSP is the oldest, continuously operating syringe exchange program in the United States, providing service to Tacoma and Pierce County without interruption since 1988. TSP is a non-profit, 501(c)3 agency. Formerly known as the Tacoma Needle Exchange Program (TNEP).
The purpose of the Tacoma Syringe Program (TSP) is to ensure that drug users have the same access to quality disease prevention and health care that other citizens of our society enjoy. Our goal is to prevent the transmission of HIV, HCV and other blood borne pathogens among drug users, their partners, family, and friends. PDAP’s efforts are directed by the acknowledgment that drug use and misuse is a public health issue. We seek the equitable inclusion of drug users and sex workers in the health care system and fair treatment of these individuals by society at large. We support unrestricted access to the tools and information these populations need to make healthy choices. At the core of this effort is the provision of sterile syringes and other injecting equipment, information, advocacy and referral to other services.
TSP currently provides the following services in Pierce County; unlimited access to sterile syringes and other injecting equipment; safe collection and proper disposal of used syringes; condom distribution; distribution of information regarding safer injecting, safer sexual practices and risk reduction; and referral to social, health and welfare services. Our target population includes all drug injectors in Pierce County. We provide our services at two van based street sites in Tacoma and throughout the county to satellite exchanges via mobile delivery service.
